|I met Donald at a Powwow at the Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg during the fall of 1998. I was attending the dancing competition being held in the large tented arena. The dance music is usually loud and, of course, has a very strong drum beat which I find spell-binding. Most of the dancers were wearing spectacular outfits which comprised everything from eagle feathers and ribbons to bells and beadwork.
Donald was standing with a friend watching the current performance in the arena. I noticed Donald's outfit was colorful yet modest and was intrigued by the two-tone face paint he was wearing. I asked if he would mind if I took his picture. I think he found the question amusing but agreed.
Outside the arena, the wind was blowing and this effect on his hair supported Donald's proud appearance.
Donald, born in 1946, is of Plains Cree heritage and lives in Hobbema, Alberta. He told me that after having worked for the past ten years he had lost touch with himself and his culture. He quit his job and took up the Powwow circuit which takes him through many parts of Canada and the United States.
