David Hannaq was born on the land west of Arviat in 1940. He did not attend school but rather spent his time exploring the land. By age 13 David was out hunting with his father every day. At age 16 his family, now with one sister, moved to Arviat.

In 1959 David married Margaret. Margaret had lived in Arviat since 1952 and had learned some English while working with the R.C.M.P. detachment in town. They had one daughter, Sara, and adopted 3 other children. David worked for the hamlet of Arviat for 27 years and retired in 2004.

I was fortunate to photograph David at home on that sunny day in 2004 just as he was leaving to hunt. David doesn’t have a cabin and is content to travel on the land for the day on his ATV. “I love hunting, and the fresh air and peacefulness on the land.” David passed away in September, 2008, at age 68.
