Samuel Bignell was born March 17th, 1915 at Cumberland House, Saskatchewan. It was truly the wilderness that was to become Samuel's home. With a love of the land evident, even at an early age, he began learning the skills that would later sustain him and his own family for most of his life.

In turn, that knowledge, acquired through years of hunting, fishing and trapping, he passed on to his children. He enjoyed taking his family camping and while around the campfire, drinking his bush tea, would tell entertaining tales of his youth.

When I met Samuel, during the summer of 2000, I was struck by his humility. He was an instantly likable fellow. We could speak little that day but I remember how much I wanted to talk with him at a later time. That opportunity never came. Without having a chance to view his portrait, Samuel Bignell passed away on August 16th, 2001 at the age of 86.
